Seamless integration of accessible
features into building redesign

The challenge

As part of the rebirth of North Sydney due to the planned metro station, the owners of 65 Berry Street wanted to revamp their 1980s building and revitalise the entry experience to appeal to the building’s young tenant demographic. They also sought to separate the entrances for commercial and retail tenants.

To ensure that accessible and ambulant building features were seamlessly integrated into the design, Inclusive Places was brought onboard.

The approach

We analysed the existing entrance features, sanitary facilities and layout of the floor spaces, and made recommendations on what needed to be upgraded to meet regulations, while realising their goal of appealing to younger occupants.

The results

Thanks to new lifts, bathrooms and end-of-trip facilities, people with disabilities can now participate in the building independently. Not only did we meet the intent of the DDA, but we helped breathe new life into spaces — such as the tiered seating areas for informal and formal gatherings.
