Redefining retirement living at
Cardinal Freeman Retirement Village
The challenge
Cardinal Freeman Retirement Village sought to redevelop an historic site in Sydney’s inner west, transforming it from low-cost affordable housing into a highly desirable place for older Australians to call home. Called The Residences at Cardinal Freeman, the project drew inspiration from ‘aging in place’ — where the focus is on enabling people to live in the residence of their choice for as long as they are able.
As well as a carefully considered design to realise this goal, the project needed to address topography constraints and enable access from all street frontages.
The approach
Inclusive Places was brought in to assess the existing aged care facility and make recommendations on how to enable accessibility for residents with a wide range of mobility and medical needs.
We sought a solution that would work in harmony with the existing building, while making it easier and safer for residents to move around the village every day.
The results
The Residences at Cardinal Freeman is a great example of ‘aging in place’-style accommodation for seniors. Upon our advice, the facility includes external lifts to reduce the need for residents to negotiate steep street pathways, and all buildings are connected for easier navigation.
Realignment of a major road has provided a more legible movement system through the site, connecting with surrounding streets, improving pedestrian accessibility and delivering a new clear arrival point for the community in residence.
